Writeboard.com provides users with a convenient, web based text document. The user can save all edits made to the document and roll back to previous versions as necessary. Users can also compare changes and work with others to collaborate on documents and projects. To begin, the user can create a document complete with a title and body. Users can then invite others to collaborate on their document by sending an invitation email. Past versions are listed with the author’s name and the amount of time that has passed since the edits were made. The user can select two versions of a document and compare them as well. White Board highlights the differences so the user can see how the project has evolved. The application also integrates with Backpack, which allows the user to list all of their current white boards in one place.Show more screenshots »
Writeboard was launched in July of 2007 by its creators, 37 Signals. Along with White Board, the company also developed Backpack, BaseCamp, CampFire, HighRise and Ta Da List. White Board was designed to give users a simple, effective and affordable way to manage documents online, both alone and with a group of others.
Writeboard offers its users many of the same features as other, similar applications. There are a few extras that some text editors neglect, including document versioning. Users can easily return to a previous version of the document, which can be very valuable when working with a group. The user can also compare two versions to see exactly what was changed between them.
The designers decided to go for complete simplicity and ease of use when designing this site. There are no complicated menus or buttons to distract you, just the Writeboard itself. Writeboard maintains a basic appearance that is still very well-organized and professional. A white background and black text make it easy to read while versions are listed with a blink link that states how long ago the version was created beside the name of the person who made it. Check boxes are included with versions so the user can select and compare specific documents.
The new Writeboard creation form is found right on the homepage. The user can fill out the form found in the yellow box along the left hand side of the page. The form asks the user for a board name, password and an email address. The email address is used to identify the user only. The user must also check a small box at the bottom of the form to confirm their agreement with the Writeboard terms. After clicking the grey “Create the Writeboard” button below, the user is automatically taken to their newly created board.
Writeboard welcomes all users for free. There are no subscription fees or other expenses associated with using the application. The user can create a brand new Writeboard or collaborate on one they have been invited to. All users are given access to all current features and can create or participate on multiple Writeboards for free.
Writeboard is a useful site containing a very basic utility, namely the ability for multiple users to scribble on a virtual whiteboard, with all changes made by each user being automatically saved. Users who already have Backpack accounts may really appreciate the integration option. For true collaboration with more complicated texts, there are better solutions available, such as Google Docs.
